The Undead Project

Project Hydra Will never be Dead!

Long time no update..... :)

As you might recall I have been caught by the TCC (Motherfuckers....) and as such I was supposed to have a trial... The Asat Sanegor got me a plea bargin and I got off with community service.

My new Title will be Library.Commander :-P

In any case as part of my bargin I have agreed to stop facilitating the transfer of illegal files in the Technion, forever. (not doing so will result in expulsion for two semesters)

As such, I have been refusing for some time to help new people connect to Project Hydra, and will continue to do so - I am sorry but I can not know you are not spies from the TCC!!! :)

I believe that Project Hydra will never die, and as such may be classified as not only a private, encrypted p2p network, but also as an undead p2p network.

while most will work hard with their anti-sematic Mirc scripts, Project Hydra will not die.
while some will be caught using DC byt the TCC, Project Hydra will not die.
while DC ports and packets will be blocked inside the dorms, Project Hydra will not die.

and then when all else fails they will all come back, and send me an e-mail:

hi!
connect me, please
my pulic key is:

DC hub

Hello everyone!

Project Hydra has been running smoothly for some time now and though most do not see it as superior to DC (and on most aspects it is not) it provides the users with the safety of encryption (see post regarding "The TCC wants YOU!" for why this is necessary).

For some time now after I was caught by the TCC, there has been a new DC hub online.
(As far as I know it is only for registered users so no sense in posting the address)

The admin of the hub has created some ingenious methods of cloaking the transmissions, but they are still what is called "clear text". they are hidden only in a way you can hide a glass bowl in a box, where as Project Hydra's hides the transfers in what could be looked at as crushing the bowl to powder and sending it through normal mail.

By using DC you are taking the risk that the TCC will be able to open that box, and see that you are transferring illegal files (the bowl).

with Project Hydra they can only tell you were transferring something (powder glass) and can't prove you did something illegal.

You can take your own chances with this, but from what I have seen in the last weeks it has become increasingly likely that the TCC will start coming after individual file shareres.

I would like to leave you today with a poem inspired by "First they came…", a poem attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller.

First they came for the hackers.
But I never hacked anyone,
so I didn't speak up.

Then they came for the Hub Admins.
But I thought there would always be someone to open a new hub anyway,
so I didn't speak up.

Then they came for the guy running "Hapetek Hasagol".
But I thought I could always get references from somewhere else,
so I didn't speak up.

Then they came for the guys downloading from outside the Technion network.
But I though the internet was really slow because of them,
so I didn't speak up.

Then they came for me.
And by that time there was no one left to speak up.

A Warning and Some Answers to FAQ

Now that the file sharing in the Technion doesn't have a server (or that everyone is a server, whichever way you look at it...), the TCC has no one to go after but YOU!
Be warned.
By encrypting the files you transfer (automatically done in WASTE) you can be sure they won't charge you for copyright infringement (which could get you kicked out of the Technion) and the maximum they can do is to charge you for operating a server.

The technion law is very unclear and that just means they can do what they want. any machine sending any file to another (even just a Word document) is a server, which is against the Law.

in any case, you take your own risk, and there IS a risk. good luck.

F.A.Q
Q: Why are the downloads so slow?
A: WASTE uses an encryted file transfer method which means that no one can read the contents of your transfers except you, this method is fast but is not as fast as the LAN, which means that speed is maxed at around 700 KB/sec. you can download several files and get a total speed of 10 MB/sec.

Q: How many keys do I need to add?
A: You only need to add a key for one person already connected to the network. if you followed the Flash tutorial, WASTE will automatically add the keys for everyone else connected to the network.

Q: How Many Connection should I have Active?
A: About 15 seems to work well.

Q:Is it Encrypted?
A: Yes, WASTE is encrypted - which means no one can prove that you were transferring illegal files except the person you are downloading from.

Q: What happens if The TCC catch me?
A: first they will disconnect you from network and then it depends what they charge you with, either opening a server or sharing illegal files. if they charge you with opening a server you will probably be found guilty, but WASTE should prevent them from being able to prove you transferred Illegal files (unless they are the ones hosting illegal files and they download or send to you.)
since you CAN get kicked from the Technion for some years for sharing copyrighted material it is best to understand the dangers and take responsibility for your actions.

Q: If the TCC catch me, can I say it's your fault?
A: Absolutely NOT! I take no responsibility with what you do with the program! you downloaded it so YOU are responsible! even opening the program may in fact be a violation of the technion policy for which you might go to vaadat mishmaat!

Q: Is WASTE available for other operating systems?
A: there are versions for Mac, Linux, Windows and POSIX (WTF??) here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82356

Enjoy!

Security Warning

It has been brought to my attention (kudos Gili) that there is a slight security risk in Waste which can be addressed easily.

Someone can send you files and the standard action is to receive. but with a small checkbox you can make sure WASTE will ask you if you want the file or not:

go to:
File > Preferences > Receiving > and check the box that says: "Prompt before accepting"

here's a pic of the checkbox (click for larger version):

That's It kids! Play Safe!

Project Hydra - Gathering Momentum

Project hydra is having a great start!

a few updates:

1)In active connections, you can keep it down to 10 or even less active connections. The flash presentation is wrong at that point!

2) stop posting keys in the comments. instead read the comments. people who are already connected will post their email. you can email them and exchange keys and IPs.
also, the link to the download again:

http://filesbox.info/998ProjectHydra.zip

Please come back and help others connect.
if you still can't connect because of technical problems you can email technion.hub@gmail.com and i will try to help you.

TCC shut down hub

The TCC have shut down the hub, right now i'm a bit nervous. nothing is certain until sunday since they have all gone home.

this should serfver as a warning to everyone. operating HUBS is dangerous.

we will continue with project hydra.

I will contact the beta testers today.

Hub Will Stay Open

First I would like to thank all the beta testers for offering your help.

we'll start testing Project Hydra tommorow around noon and we expect to release it a few hours later.

so if all goes well:
Project Hydra Will be released In less than 12 Hours!

in the meantime the hub will stay open for a while longer, so the transition will be smooth.

-Moonbase.Commander

Important Note
It is important that everyone understand that the DC protocol is not safe for us to use inside the technion.
Because DC relies on HUBS to operate, it is very very easy for the TCC to shut the DC down.
Project Hydra will use a Program which will use a Network Without HUBS! so no action by the TCC can shut us down.
Please do not be tempted to continue using DC.
If we continue to use DC we will always be weak and vulnerable, while Poject hydra will make us Invincible. (because it also encrypts the transfers).

think about that. Invincible. don't you want to be part of that?

Project Hydra

Ok guys, Project Hydra is ready but needs testing on thursday or maybe friday.

don't worry! everyone will take part and will be able to connect. DC hub will remain open until most of the people have moved to Project Hydra.

Sorry for the delay and see you thursday!

-Moonbase.Commander

p.s.

for beta testing I will need about 10 volunteers so if you will be available on thursday and friday to test out the new network.
please send an email with your name and phone number to technion.hub@gmail.com

Project Hydra - Back from the Dead!

After all hope was lost, Project Hydra has risen from the ashes!

The hub WILL close down, but in it's place there will come a new Ruler of the file sharing.

Right now i'm going to do some laundry (now you can go there and wonder: "is that guy Moonbase.Commander?" :)

but later I will upload the details.

it will not be simple at first but it will be secure and most important of all:

TCC Shutdown Proof certified by Moonbase.Commander

I will update the blog later today with the instruction and details.

HUB GOING DOWN

DUE TO SECURITY CONCERNS (MAINLY MY ASS BEING KICKED BY THE TCC) THE HUB WILL GO DOWN ON 04.06.07 IF ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WILL NOT HAPPEN:

1)SOMEONE WITH NETWORKING KNOWLEDGE FINDS A WAY TO TUNNEL THROUGH THE FIREWALL IN THE FARMS.

2)SOMEONE ELSE TAKES THE RISK AND RUNS THE HUB.

I'M TRYING TO FIND SOLUTIONS AS WELL AND WORKING HARD ON IT. BUT I CAN'T AFFORD THIS RISK FOR VERY LONG, NOT WHEN SO MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS HUB.

THIS IS YOUR BURDEN AS WELL! FIND PEOPLE WITH NETOWRKING EXPERIENCE AND HAVE THEM CONTACT ME AT:

technion.hub@gmail.com

IF THE TUNNELING WILL NOT WORK THE SERVER --WILL-- GO DOWN.

-Moonbase.Commander

Blocking in farms and labs

still no resolution to the blocking of the DC in farms and labs, but were working on it.

If you have experience in networks and feel you can help beyond changing a port please contact us and help!

New port

Hi guys (and bumbelbee :)

if you are trying to connect from inside farms or from outside the technion try using this address instead:

technionhub.gotdns.org:5040

this might not work... still experimental! :)

please let us know if it works: technion.hub@gmail.com

-Moonbase.Commander

Project Hydra

Project Hydra

A plan has been set in motion to create a system where no action by the TCC, whatsoever, will result in either the shutdown of the DC hub in the Technion or actions against the admin (I've got to cover my ass too if you don't mind :)

soon you will know more, but for now what you need to know is that you should get StrongDC.

get it here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/strongdc/sdc203.rar

StrongDC is by far the best DC client and will ensure you can connect to the Hydra Project Easily.
You don't have to get StrongDC, but it is recommended.

The revolution will not be televised. it will be shared through the DC.

Launch of the DC hub.

as you might know, the old DC hub has been shut down by the TCC.

While the cause of this may be unclear, one thing is clear - it is not coming back up.

as a response we are creating a new hub:

TechnionHub.gotdns.org

Right now this is run from a PC with limited power, so performence might be not be really good right now.

Later on it is possible that we would like to start passing the hat around, and collecting donations for some upgrades but for now we are doing our best to get free parts from friends and family.

If you have one or more of these things to donate it would be great:

-
a PC that is stronger than a Pentium 3 733 mhz
-RAM for pentium 3 series. (RAM freq. 133 mhz.)
-Ethernet HUB/Router/Switch
-KVM switch
-Power supply unit for PC
-PCI Ethernet card

Alot of these things are just things most of you have lying around so do something good with it - donate it!

To donate stuff contact us at technion.hub@gmail.com

Some important notes about the hub:
-Sharing copyrighted material is prohibited.
-Tell everyone about the hub.
-This hub has nothing to do with old hub, and is not run by the same people.

Happy Harish,
-Moonbase.Commander
